Job Summary

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Bequests Manager oversees the administration of bequests matters for WWP. This includes providing advice and guidance to WWP leadership on these matters, managing the legal bequests team, partnering with the major gifts/planned giving team,  providing input on the WWP Long-Term Support Trust (LTST), and ensuring all bequest case files, information, reports and other documents are completed accurately.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal point of contact for bequests administration matters for the organization.
  • Lead and manage a team of paralegals and legal professionals responsible for handling bequests administration matters for the organization.
  • Manage bequest-related legal and financial notices, correspondence, and litigation under the supervision of the WWP General Counsel.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including Major Gifts, Resource Development, Accounting, Finance, outside counsel, financial advisors, and trustees and personal representatives as needed.
  • Oversee and manage the maintenance of bequest case files and correspondence records.
  • Ensure all necessary information, materials, reports, and other documents are complete and accurate bequest records are collected and maintained.
  • Under the supervision of the WWP General Counsel, draft, review, and revise correspondence and other documents related to bequest files.
  • Perform research on bequest and planned-giving topics in collaboration with internal teams.
  • Prepare and present bequest training and education in collaboration with major gifts and other fundraising teams.
  • Provide input on long-term support trusts (LTST), including providing guidance on services offered by LTST.
  • Analyze complex bequest-related issues and, in coordination with WWP General Counsel, provide guidance on strategy for bequests-related matters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced understanding of trust and estate laws, including restricted gifts, charitable trusts, special needs planning, public benefits qualifications, e.g., Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits, pooled income trusts, and ABLE accounts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relationship management and partnering. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals, collaborate, and establish and build effective working relationships within WWP organization and externally with members of the public, government officials, staff, and regulators.

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach and educate paralegals and legal professionals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning to enhance knowledge in bequests and planned giving and better support the organization.
  • Strong presentation skills. Confident communicator, with demonstrated ability to present information effectively to large audiences, small groups, and individuals, and serve as a representative of the organization.
  • High energy level. Self-starter; willing to take initiative.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Wounded Warrior Project and its mission, values, programs and services, and the impact of these programs and services on wounded warriors and their families.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ten years of experience as a fiduciary in a trust department or trust officer for a financial institution;
    Five years of trust and estate planning or probate experience as in-house counsel in a legal department or as an attorney in a law firm.



  • Juris doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Three years of experience administering estate settlements (fiduciaries or trust officers).
  • Three years of experience advising clients on planned giving arrangements.
  • Three years of staff management experience.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA) Designation (fiduciaries or trust officers) or Bar admission in any state or Florida in-house counsel certificate (or eligibility to obtain the certificate--attorney) preferred.
