Job Summary

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Vice President of Communications develops and executes the WWP communication strategy and oversees all aspects of internal and external communications including public relations, media relations, social media, and online communications and media. The VP-Communications manages communications activities to reinforce, promote, enhance, and protect WWP’s brand reputation, and serves as an ambassador for the organization, and builds relationships with the media to advance the WWP’s position with relevant constituents and drive broader awareness, affinity, and donor support for Wounded Warrior Project.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop an integrated strategic communications plan to advance WWP’s brand identity and broaden awareness and increase the visibility of WWP’s programs and priorities across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Oversee all aspects of WWP’s internal and external communications including public relations, media relations, social media, online communications, and media.
  • Create a public relations strategy that cultivates and enhances meaningful relationships with targeted external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies.
  • Serve as a spokesperson on media interactions that promote or impact the organization.
  • Actively engage, cultivate, and manage media relationships to ensure coverage surrounding WWP programs, special events, public announcements, and other initiatives, to drive broader awareness, affinity, and donor support.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities. Oversee preparation of talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning, prioritization, measurement, and optimization.
  • Provide leadership direction to communications team to ensure goals, objectives, and KPIs are met, and the communications strategic plan is properly executed. Mentor staff and develop their skills and abilities, and support a collaborative, positive, productive work environment.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and successfully position subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a strategic communications team to advance the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Demonstrated success leading, coaching, and mentoring teams. Proven management skills that foster an open dialog with staff. Team-oriented, with a desire to productively engage with others on day-to-day activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into action plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess gaps and opportunities in a changing environment, and adjust strategies as appropriate.
  • Creative and innovative in identifying effective methods to utilize new media technologies.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent and persuasive communicator. Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively interface with senior management, WWP’s Board of Directors, and staff at all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker.
  • Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of WWP’s leadership team and Board of Directors.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, or related field.
  • Seven years of experience in a senior communications role either in-house or with an agency.
  • Five years of leadership experience.

Preferences

 

  • Master’s degree.
  • Five years of experience in a commercial business environment.
