    The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Adaptive Sports Specialist assists WWP Alumni with adaptive sports (AS) programming and events for a geographic area, providing networking, connections, support, mentoring, and education to Alumni. The Adaptive Sports Specialist serves as a point-of-contact for adaptive sports opportunities and organizations, e.g. Warrior Games, Paralympic Clinics, National Wheelchair Veterans Games, and develops and manages those relationships to help warriors achieve their adaptive sports goals.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    • Serve as a liaison for WWP in the adaptive sports community. Assist with grassroots efforts and in support of specific campaigns to educate WWP Alumni and the community about participation in adaptive sports.
    • Reach out to WWP Alumni, communicate, network, and share information with them about adaptive sports events and clinics.
    • Serve as point of contact for WWP Alumni, identify warrior needs, and match those needs with WWP program offerings, events, activities, and services, and refer them to appropriate resources.
    • Implement methods to establish connections with WWP and warriors, and between individual warriors, to increase participation in sponsored events and activities.
    • Plan, coordinate, and execute adaptive sports opportunities for WWP Alumni. Assist warriors with travel, assistive technology, and equipment needs to help them achieve their adaptive sports goals. Interact with warriors at events to share experiences.
    • Follow up with Alumni and serve as a mentor to them, supporting their adaptive sports needs and connections within the local community.
    • Develop and maintain working relationships with related health care and social service providers for adaptive equipment.
    • Represent WWP in adaptive sports opportunities in the Veteran’s Administration (VA) Military Treatment Facilities and Rehabilitation Centers.
    • Establish and maintain relationships with major adaptive sports associations and national (U.S.A) governing bodies, e.g., DSUSA, Warrior Games, Invictus Games, VA Adaptive Sports (Winter & Summer Clinics), National Veterans Wheelchair Games, US Paralympics, Wheelchair Basketball, Quad Rugby, Wheelchair Softball, Hand cycling, and Wheelchair Tennis.
    • Collaborate with WWP internal staff, e.g., Communications and Direct Response teams, and identify, share, and promote motivational and inspirational stories about Alumni and their families as they engage in life and independence through adaptive sports.
    • Utilize technology and social media to promote Alumni participation in adaptive sports.
    • Utilize WWP intranet electronic tracking systems to maintain warrior and family support records.
    • Collaborate with other WWP departments to ensure adaptive sports program issues are successfully communicated and coordinated, and any issues resolved.
    • Other related duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Demonstrated understanding of the VA’s Hospital Prosthetics procedures and Assistive Technology and Equipment-related procedures.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Adaptive Sports programming environment at the local, regional, and national levels.
    • Strong collaboration and relationship building skills. Ability to communicate with diverse personalities in a tactful, mature, flexible manner. Ability to build rapport with service-specific wounded warriors and their families.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Professional presence and demeanor. Skill and ease speaking in public and serving as a representative for the organization.

    Education & Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree. Equivalent combination of education, experience with the adaptive sports community, applicable military experience, training, or certification may be considered in lieu of degree.
    • Four years of experience working with or in the adaptive sports community.
    • Two years’ experience in relationship-building with military organizations, veteran’s associations, Paralympics, or other non-profit, city or state-run adaptive sports programs.
    • Two years’ experience in relationship-building with VA Military Treatment Facilities or Rehabilitation Centers.
    • Must be able to travel between 25% - 50% of the time including evening and weekend travel.

    Preferences

    • Bachelor’s degree in recreation therapy, exercise science, health management, or related field.
    • Five years of Adaptive Sports participation or competition experience.
    • One year of experience with social networking related to veterans and adaptive sports.
