Job Summary

The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Government and Community Relations Communications Specialist is responsible for promoting the policy and advocacy priorities of the organization and WWP’s ongoing work with the federal government, and military and veterans service organizations. This position will also be responsible for working with partner organizations and like-minded organizations to amplify the collective impact on warriors and their families.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop media advisories, press releases, articles, blogs, and digital content, ensuring all are written in accordance with the organization’s style guide that dictates writing standards such as tense, voice or the spelling of certain words
  • In coordination with the Government and Community Relations team, and under direction from the Communications Director, Government and Community Relations, develop messaging on emerging policy items and legislative initiatives impacting warriors and their families, and strategic partnerships
  • Draft talking points, statements for the record, organizational messaging, and responses to inquiries relating to WWP advocacy initiatives and strategic partnerships
  • In coordination with the Government and Community Relations team, and under direction from the Communications Director, Government and Community Relations, execute communications campaigns that amplify WWP legislative and policy efforts with key media and targeted audiences
  • Work closely with the Government and Community Relations team and partner with the communications teams of WWP’s strategic partners to identify opportunities to amplify impact on warriors through content pieces
  • Distribute media advisories, statements, and press releases through direct pitching and distributing through newswire service
  • Identify subject matter experts at WWP, create thought leadership content that amplifies WWP position on policy issues, and develop appropriate distribution strategy
  • Research media coverage, monitor trending policy and legislative topics, and identify relevant opportunities to place WWP in emerging stories
  • Coordinate logistics for interviews with WWP staff and warriors
  • Screen incoming media inquiries
  • Work closely with the social media team to create content and identify appropriate channels for messaging, and support management of WWP’s DC-focused social media channels
  • Assist the Government and Community Relations team with proofreading and editing activities as necessary
  • Assist the Communications Director, Government and Community Relations with performing charitable investment reviews
  • Other related duties as assigned


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Fluent in AP Style
  • Ability to quickly learn WWP style, voice, and brand marks
  • Knowledge of Congress and the legislative process
  • Experience developing messaging for and managing social media channels, particularly Twitter
  • Ability to communicate complex information or processes in easy-to-digest format
  • Highly self-motivated, passionate and creative team player with demonstrated commitment to organization’s mission
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team environment, supporting all staff throughout the organization
  • Ability to communicate with diverse personalities in a tactful, mature, and professional manner
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive matters with confidentiality, diplomacy, and professionalism
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and effectively handle multiple projects with tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Must possess a professional presence and demeanor
  • Ability to provide high level of service to targeted client/customer base
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, media relations, or journalism, required
  • Four (4) years’ experience in media relations or public relations field required
  • One (1) year of experience interacting with press/media required, must include ‘on-the-record’ experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint required
  • Experience with editing and design of infographics, photography, and videography preferred
  • Experience working on Capitol Hill or federal agency preferred
