Job Summary

Wounded Warrior Project’s (WWP) Staff Attorney, Employment Law is responsible for assisting the legal department, in addition to providing legal advice and counsel with regard to employment-law related issues

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and consult on a variety of legal matters including, but not limited to, employee relations, employee benefits, and labor and employment matters. (e.g. performance management, employee discipline, termination, workplace investigations, policy development, FLSA, FMLA, wage and hour issues, workplace accommodations, applications, training, and the protection of intellectual property, trade secrets and confidential information)
  • Assist WWP staff in understanding legal aspects and risks of issues encountered in the conduct of their business
  • Draft, analyze, and review legal documents, including contracts, regarding employment matters (e.g. employee benefit contracts, employee applications, policies and procedures)
  • Investigate and evaluate the legal implications and impact of legal compliance issues, and recommend operational changes or alternative practices, processes, policies and/or procedures
  • Assist, as needed, with litigation management, including coordination with outside counsel and applicable insurance carriers
  • Assist with protecting the interests of WWP by managing risk, liability, and financial exposure.
  • Assist with managing relationships with insurers
  • Develop, monitor, and evaluate policies, processes and procedures to support risk management efforts
  • Work on projects that assist the Human Resources (HR) team
  • Stay up-to-date on employment law developments to ensure compliance
  • Assist with other transactional matters as requested
  • Other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to identify, understand and analyze legal and programmatic issues to address areas of potential risk for the organization, and draft appropriate responses
  • Basic understanding of employment law, including but not limited to, employee relations, employee benefits and labor and employment.
  • Basic understanding of transactional law, including but not limited to, contracts, waivers, insurance, and/or intellectual property
  • Willingness to learn and/or enhance knowledge in relevant subject areas to better support the organization.
  • Highly self-motivated, passionate and creative team player with demonstrated commitment to organizational culture, goals, and objectives
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, team environment, supporting all staff throughout the organization
  • Ability to communicate with diverse personalities in a tactful, mature, and professional manner
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive matters with confidentiality, diplomacy, and professionalism
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize and effectively handle multiple projects with tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Working knowledge of Westlaw, LexisNexis, and advanced business knowledge
  • Possess a professional presence and demeanor
  • Possess excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to provide high level of service to targeted client/customer base
  • Ability to take initiative, multi-task, work independently and work well under pressure
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Ability to define and/or develop organizational policies, procedures, and processes

 

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Juris doctorate degree and bar admission required
  • Three (3) years of employment law experience required
  • In-house, transactional/contracts, and/or nonprofit experience preferred
  • Law review and journal experience preferred

Certifications & Licensure

  • Bar admission in Florida preferred
